A Million Tails of Hope

Building a Home for Manitoba’s Cats and Dogs in Need

For 25 years, D’Arcy’s Animal Rescue Centre has been a safe haven for thousands of abandoned, abused, and stray cats and dogs in Manitoba. Now we’re facing a major challenge: our lease is ending, and our building has been promised to another business.

A Million Tales of Hope is a campaign to raise $1 million to create a new shelter. This space will give us room to grow, expand adoptions, and provide the community with the services animals deserve.

Why Your Support Matters

Your support will:

  • Build a safe, modern, and sustainable shelter in Winnipeg
  • Expand adoption capacity for both cats and dogs
  • Create self-sustaining programs like boarding, retail, and a community café
  • Fund an on-site veterinary clinic for our spay and neuter clinics

If we can’t secure a new space, D’Arcy’s Animal Rescue Centre may be forced to pause operations. That means fewer rescues, fewer adoptions, and more animals left without care.

The new location will give us the ability to do more for animals and the people who love them:

  • More Adoptions: Larger cat rooms, additional kennels, and more welcoming adoption areas
  • Veterinary Care: A fully equipped clinic to provide spay/neuter surgeries
  • Community Programs: Dedicated space for education, adoption events, and outreach programs
  • Sustainable Funding: Revenue from boarding, retail, and café services to support rescue operations long term

When String Bean arrived at D’Arcy’s Animal Rescue Centre in Winnipeg, she carried the weight of cruelty but never lost her gentle spirit. What the team didn’t know yet was that she wasn’t just fighting for her own life, she was carrying three tiny ones too.

Rescue

In February 2024, a community partner in Winnipeg brought String Bean, a one-year-old brown tabby, to D’Arcy’s Animal Rescue Centre. She had suffered severe trauma to her left eye after being kicked by a horrible person. Despite everything, String Bean was still incredibly sweet to staff and volunteers. They knew she deserved proper care and a loving home.

Recovery

After surgery and weeks of healing at the shelter, staff member Trista noticed String Bean’s belly growing. An ultrasound confirmed she was pregnant. On March 22, 2024, she gave birth to three healthy kittens: Edamame, Garbonzo, and Pinto. The shelter became a safe and loving place for the little family to grow. “Even after all she’d been through, she was so affectionate,” says Trista. “Watching her nurture her babies reminded all of us why this work matters.”

A New Beginning

Once the kittens were old enough, all three found loving homes. By June, String Bean did too.

Once abandoned on the streets of rural Manitoba, Jack Skellington had learned to survive on his own. It took patience, care, and kindness from the team at D’Arcy’s Animal Rescue Centre to show him what it meant to truly belong.

Rescue

In October 2019, a small Jack Russell terrier with a black spot was found wandering Steinbach, Manitoba. He was named “Jack Skellington” by shelter staff and volunteers as he arrived during the spooky halloween season. At six years old, he had never been trained, neutered, or vaccinated. He was given as a gift to his previous owner who did not care for his size or well-being. This person would leave him outside, often for days, to fend for himself, before ultimately abandoning him.

Recovery

When Jack arrived at D’Arcy’s Animal Rescue Centre in Winnipeg, he was fearful and unsure. The team gave him the care, patience, and comfort he needed to trust again. He was neutered, provided with proper health checks and vaccinations, and was ready to find the home he deserved.

A New Beginning

Jack met a young couple who welcomed him into their home and growing family and named him “Larry”. Today, he is a cherished companion who spends his days playing and resting in the warmth of his family. “While we can tell Larry has had a rough start, we couldn’t imagine our busy household without his little footsteps,” says Adam, his adopter. “We’re grateful for D’Arcy’s ARC for helping him find his way to us!”

Timothee’s journey to D’Arcy’s Animal Rescue Centre began in Northern Manitoba with uncertainty and illness. Thanks to a community that refused to give up on him, his story became one of strength, compassion, and hope.

Rescue

Timothee Paw-lamet, a two-year-old German Shepherd cross, was abandoned in a Northern Manitoba community. A kind foster family cared for him for six months until D’Arcy’s Animal Rescue Centre could make space to bring him in. When he arrived in March 2025,  unfortunately he tested positive for heartworm, a serious and life-threatening condition.

Recovery

His treatment cost thousands of dollars and required months of rest in a quiet environment. Staff and volunteers provided patient, consistent care while he regained his strength. Many other shelters would not have had the resources and commitment to give him that chance.

“Seeing him slowly gain strength reminded us why this work is so important,” says Annie Johnston, Shelter Manager. “Every animal deserves the time and care to heal.”

A New Beginning

By October 2025, Timothee was fully recovered and ready for adoption. He found a family who adores him, a testament to the compassion and commitment that define D’Arcy’s Animal Rescue Centre in Winnipeg.
